Traveling with Kids?
Here are a few travel tips we use traveling with our three young kids.
Traveling by plane
Get to the airport early, its so much easier to get through the check in counter and security with time to spare. If your stressed your kids will be stressed.
Once your at your gate, let the kids run around. My husband and I take turns watching the bags while the other lets the kids explore.
Don't forget something for your kids to do while waiting at the gate.
Sometime the wait can be hours.
Where some airlines let you get on the plane first with kids, we try to be the last. Getting on first and waiting for everyone else to get on can add lots of minutes to the trip.
Try to fly out of smaller regional airports. The lines can be shorter and the parking cheaper. I have gotten some great deals flying out of or into smaller airports.
Try to fly out early in the morning, less chance of flights being delayed. When flying in or out, if we have a real early flight and the airport is a drive, we sometimes stay at a hotel near the airport so we can just get up and go at the last minute. Plus some places provide park and fly packages that let you keep your car there while you travel. They provide shuttle service to and from the airport.
The Hotel
I always bring a night light with us.
I take the kids favorite pillowcases with us when we travel, makes it feel a little like home where ever we are.
I take a sound machine with us, I'll put on the rain sound for the kids at bedtime. It's soothing and can block out loud background noises you often get staying in hotels.
I try to find condo hotels when we travel. You often get a full kitchen and several bedrooms.
Plus you can get some great deals.
I always make sure I have coloring books, paper and crayons. Always help when we have down time or waiting at a restaurant.
Be prepared for a rainy day. I always carry a small new toy in my bag for each kid, like a mini Lego kit, a pack of animals or dinosaurs, or a new doll for my daughter.
Also, check out what's around, have something as a back up plan if you do get a stretch of
bad weather. Find out about any science centers or museums in the area, or even just a movie theater close by.
